Chapter 25

Rhett

Stupid. Stupid. The word kept repeating over and over in my head. How the hell could I have put June at risk like that? I knew this man was dangerous, and yet I’d been determined to test him and see how at risk we were. That’s all it would have taken to lose her…one shot. One out of the three he’d aimed at us. Or at me. He hadn’t been trying to kill her. It was me that was in the way. Me that he wanted out of the picture. And I kept upping the stakes every time I talked to him. I pissed him off more. I made him see how much better I was for her. I’d been hoping to make him so angry that he’d slip up, but we were past that now.

This stalker and I were in a deadly game of Russian roulette and all it was going to take was one pull of the trigger for either one of us to meet our maker. He wasn’t the only one with a gun. I had some too, and the only way I was going to keep June safe was to do exactly what she suggested. We were going to have to separate. But he wouldn’t know that. Neither would she until it was too late.

“You’re the one that’s quiet now.”

I glanced over at her whisper, pulling her onto my lap as Bruce and the men continued to play back footage from the cameras on the big screen in the living room, pointing at different angles as they tried to narrow a location.

“Rhett, you’ve barely said a word in the last two hours.”

“I don’t like what happened. I could have lost you. It was a stupid idea.”

“It worked. I mean, we know where everything stands now. And the men have a general idea of where he’s hiding.”

“If he stays. He may be long gone now that he’s jeopardized his position.”

“Maybe. This place isn’t so bare or remote that he’ll have many good places to hide. We can find him. Some of the men are already out there looking.”

“And he’ll know that.”

She stayed quiet but my mind didn’t stop. He’d know the men were looking, just as he knew every time a car or person left my house. He had to be a good distance off the ground. Especially for the shots he had fired. On the roof of a house? First floor. Second floor? Third? In a tree? A lot of these were vacation homes for the rich. Not all lived here year-round, although a good amount did. That was beside the point. He could see. He’d know the moment I left…or at least my car. He’d follow. That wasn’t where I was going to get him. When he realized it wasn’t me or June, he’d come back. There was only one entrance onto my street. If his vehicle was hiding, it wouldn’t be for long, and he’d return. I could be there. I could be waiting to see where he parked.
